Death by Social Media – a Poem

Spending time on social media can be soul-destroying and leave you feeling worthless. This is Death by Social Media a poem drawing the tracks of the social media emotional rollercoaster.

574 friends, met only 550 of them,
still, I celebrate ??
took me hours to photoshop
my face to perfection/put on the right smile

Once / got 490 ?, not bad
for a dreary morning's work
(never went for that walk with Betty /
creating post excellence requires time and utmost dedication)

I log on
drop head first into the newsfeed
now on board the soul-destruct
social media rollercoaster.

The highs are high,
poor Caroline, she tries so hard
but her dreadful, cringe-worthy photo
fell flat.

The lows are low,
Megan's post grabbed 1000s of
? and shares +
tons of hilarious comments.

The highs are medium,
Natasha gave my post
a ?, Bob
a ?

The lows drop lower,
Alan / right now / is sipping a cocktail
in the luxury lounge of a 5-star hotel
(me / sipping bitter coffee, shivering)

The lows burn a hole in the floor /
here come the weekly stats:
20 hours
14 posts
2 likes
570 silences
0 shares
0 friend requests

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME???
I KNOW!!!
I'M NOT PRETTY ENOUGH
I'M NOT FUNNY ENOUGH
I'M NOT RICH ENOUGH
I'M NOT CONTROVERSIAL ENOUGH
I'M BORING
NO ONE LIKES ME!!!

I log off.
Tomorrow, I'll just have to photoshop better,
be funnier, more controversial, more successful
it'll be a must-? must-share post!!!

(I'll just tell Betty that I won't have
time for a walk)
